Matt Damon in Saving Private Ryan

What better way to spend a holiday than visiting friends?

Now I can’t say that this was always how I intended to spend this much-needed day off, since the happenings detailed here were recorded about two weeks ago. Still, if happenstance leads to a holiday being spent with a podcasting brother-in-arms, then who am I to deny the kismet of it all.

If you’ve followed my cinematic wanderings for any length of time, you probably know what my favorite movie is. What you might not know, is that running a very close second to that film is a film I called my favorite for two years. Those two years began in the summer of 1998, when I was spellbound by my first viewing of Steven Spielberg’s SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Now while the film has been nudged back a slot in the overall rankings, it is still a film near & dear to my heart. Thus, when Bubbawheat came calling and asking me to choose a film to discuss on his podcast, I leapt at the chance.

I don’t plug Filmwhys near enough here at The Matinee. Basically, the entire thrust of his format comes down to tackling blindspots. So it goes without saying that I fully support what he’s trying to do. Prior to our discussion about the iconic war film, Bubbawheat had logged in episodes chronicling first-time watches of DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, and THE GODFATHER amongst many more.

Not to be outdone, Bubbawheat has his guests watch a comic book film that they haven’t seen before, thus our discussion features the unlikely pairing of CONSTANTINE to go along with SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

The episode can be found here. Any comments about how wrong I am, including why CONSTANTINE is actually awesome can be left below.

    1. As a champion of blindspotting, I could not be happier with what Bubba has done with his show. His show’s a model of enthusiasm and intuition. Hopefully he’ll have me back on soon!

  1. I’d love to have you back on again sometime, will probably do a raw episode discussing blind spots/Filmwhys in general a bit down the road and I’ll definitely hit you up for that one.
