Frankenweenie

It feels like I took a big bite out of my ‘to-watch’ pile this week.

Looking at the list below, I see four titles pulled from the stack of dvd’s sitting on my TV stand, and likewise from the glut of titles clogging up my PVR. Over the span of a week, that’s a lot of assigned reading scratched off the reading list, right?

Well “not so much” it would seem. I still have seventeen titles to go through, and that’s not even counting three more chapters of The Story of Film!

So riddle me this: What would be the general reception to me plowing through what’s left? To put aside all distracting rewatches and Netflix silliness until I’ve taken a sizeable bite out of the stack? It could easily include my October scary movie viewing, since they’ll all be taking up residence in the stack too.

But does that plan demonstrate drive…or compulsion?

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
NY EXPORT: OPUS JAZZ – Well done, James!

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
THE PARTY – Very Tati-esque
SABOTEUR – Or as I’d always called it “The Statue of Liberty Movie”
REDBELT – No Douglas, I didn’t dislike it.
MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY – One Woody Allen down: several dozen to go.
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE – Marilyn in glasses. Be still my heart…
BLOODSPORT – Ain’t no REDBELT is what I’m saying.

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Watched Before
LIFE OF PI Glorious. Its Oscars are well-deserved.
IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT – “Don’t hold it against me, I’m a little screwy myself!”
ALMOST FAMOUS I was having a rough day Wednesday. This helped me through it.
JARHEAD – Everybody singing the praises of Sam Mendes after Bond needs to revisit this underappreciated flick.
BARBARELLA – If you listened to The Matineecast, you know what made me think of this B-Movie classic.

The Story of Film
Chapter Twelve – Turns out there is a lot of 80’s cinema I need to catch up with!

  1. If you’re talking about plowing through 17 titles in a week, that may veer towards compulsion. Still, it’s hard to argue too strongly if they’re worth seeing.

Two viewings this week, and I hope to watch more next week.

THE BLING RING – I enjoyed this movie and think it was an interesting story, but it doesn’t stand near the top of Coppola’s films

WORLD WAR Z – I liked this more than I expected and thought there were some tense sequences, but it felt a bit hollow by the end.

    1. Dear Lord No! 17 in a week would likely mean that there were at least two sick days in the mix. Further, on sick days I don’t subject myself to first-time watches.

Just thinking aloud that for a few weeks, I might target the stack instead of thumbing through Netflix or pulling from the rest of my collection.

  2. Oh how I LOVE “It Happened One Night”! I need to watch it again. It’s so damn good. Also, every time I watch it I can see how rom coms of today still borrow heavily from it, just as every few years someone copies “It’s a Wonderful Life” and thinks no one will notice. Even though I like “Click” a lot, it’s totally a borderline rip off of that one.

  3. First-Timers: Enough Said, Gravity, Un Chien Andalou, Fast Company, Day of Wrath, The Brood, Road Warriors: The Life & Death of the Most Dominant Tag Team in Wrestling History, Oz the Great & Powerful, and later tonight, Scanners.

Re-Watches: The Rugrats Movie & The Hunger.

  4. Manhattan Murder Mystery is so cute. I have 12 of Woody’s directorial features left to watch, including Blue Jasmine. I should really just knock them off already.

Firsts: Frost/Nixon– Sooooooo good. I really love Michael Sheen.
Bright Young Things– For someone who’s as obsessed with the British film/television industry as me, this was like jackpot.
Alps– Pretty unsettling and interesting. I like Dogtooth better though.
The Way Way Back– Really enjoyable and sweet. I really love Sam Rockwell too.
Go Goa Gone– In-flight movie. Fun enough.
En Kort En Lang– Goofy and gay Mads Mikkelsen in a sappy romcom? Sign me up!

Rewatched: The Social Network– Had to watch this after winning best director in my college’s drama competition. Fincher is god.
The World’s End– Rewatched it with my little brother, who’s quite the Edgar Wright fan.

    1. Twelve Woody films left? Wow, that’s quite impressive. I mean, what does he have, like, sixty of them? Yeah – if I got down that close, I’d put the onus on the ones that remain.

Thanks for reminding me of THE WAY WAY BACK. Oddly enough, I didn’t write about that film this summer, but the more I think back on it, the more I like it.

  5. Did you like “Manhattan Murder Mystery”? I really have a strong affinity for that one. One my favorite Allen films. There’s something so loose and freeing, it’s just interested in being this little slice of entertainment and nothing else.

Chicago Film Festival started on Friday so I’m all over it. Checking out little movies I’ve never heard of and ignoring the bigger stuff, which is personally how I like it. Speaking of which, the Chicago Film Festival is where I saw “Gimme The Loot” last year which I put in my 2012 Top 10. And I see that’s one of the films in your stack. Watch it, man. Watch.It. It’s heaven sent.

    1. I may very well be putting on GIMME THE LOOT this afternoon. It was sent to me all the way from Australia, so I shouldn’t let it sit there and collect dust!

I really liked MYSTERY – I guess I should have said as much. The scene where they’re playing the cassettes had me in stitches. I’m actually sorta surprised with myself that I hadn’t watched this one already, for the Woody episode of The Film Locker at the very least!

    1. Oh I do so love HAUSU!!
I was lucky enough to see a screening of it a few years ago – back before the Criterion edition was even released. Bob Turnbull rangled a bunch of us up and said “You MUST see this film”

      We laughed ourselves stupid.

I think I need to revisit it sometime soon.
