burn

So what we have here is a concentrated dose.

You see my beloved Toronto Blue Jays went on a bot of a winning streak this past week, and as such I found myself watching games more frequently – and for longer – than I usually do. Add in the fact that the weather around this town has taken a turn for the spectacular, and what you get is me not wanting to be parked on my couch for a whole lot more than necessary.

So what happened instead was that the moments I did decide to toss on a movie  – and of course the one moment I ran to the cinema – I put the onus on titles I’d never seen before. Perhaps I wanted to make best use of my time. Or perhaps I wanted to tilt the scale a little bit in the first-timer/rewatch ratio. Who’s to say?

Something tells me I might want to start getting used to this, since June is shaping up to be a wild month – wild in a great way, but wild in a way that might keep my weekly watchings down to single digits more often than not. Guess I should keep the focus on first-timers then, eh?

Here’s The Week at Hand…

Screenings
TOM AT THE FARM –  Well damn, that was bleak…

Blu-Rays/DVD’s I’ve Never Seen
LE SAMOURAI –  Pretty sure I’m gonna need to buy myself this one soon.
BATTLE ROYALE – I feel like starting a fight and saying that I prefer THE HUNGER GAMES.
ST. ELMO’S FIRE – There’s no fire? What the hell?!
BLUE RUIN – I’m not sure what I expected, but that wasn’t it.
SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS – A few of y’all had been mentioning this one to me – thanks a bunch for that!
THE JEWEL OF THE NILE – Yeah, this is definitely a case of sequelitis.

14 Replies to “Days of The Week (Films Watched May 24 – May 30)

  1. New to me:

All the Boys love Mandy Lane – While I hear 50/50 and Warm Bodies are the ones to see from this directer, it does mask the fact that this film is awful.

The Black Klansman – Went on a mini-Blaxplotation kick. Terrible performances/dialogue but I still enjoyed the film. I kind of wish a better director would remake this film.

Slaves – Blaxplotation-ish film #2. Despite starring the great Ossie Davis, Slaves only served to further reminded me of how much craft went in making 12 Years a Slave more than a run-of-the mill slavery story.

Brotherhood of Death – Blaxplotation film #3. While decent, I can barely remember what happened in this.

J.D.’s Revenge – Blaxplotation film #4. Glynn Turman (Gremlins, Super 8) and Louis Gossett Jr. starring in a supernatural/mobster blaxplotation revenge film. Yes please!

Only Lovers Left Alive – Loved it.

X-Men:Days of Future Past – It is fun for what it is, but not as great as many are making it out to be.

    Cyber-Seniors – A charming homegrown documentary.

I Killed My Mother – Decided to final stop procrastinating on Xavier Dolan’s films. My god did I ever love this film!

Heartbeats – Dolan film #2, good but not as strong as it could have been. Still, I love the style of his filmmaking.

    Re-watched:
Transformers – I enjoy it. Still think Shia LaBeouf is the best thing in this film.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Jive talking robots, robot heaven…yep this film is a mess.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – This film was even more painful the second time around.

    1. That’s a busy week man – what’d you do, teach the little one to cook for himself?

For how long it took for MANDY LANE to see the light of day, it surprises me to hear so much mixed reaction. Back when it played the festival circuit, everyone who got to see it gave it a ringing endorsement…now people are coming away saying “meh”.

Another point on the board for Festival Goggles?

  2. Aww man, Battle Royale rocks! Also Sweet Smell of Success is awesome! We talked about it in our Noirvember episode. I really liked Tom at the Farm too 🙂

Firsts: Do the Right Thing– Blind spot entry. A bit loud but I liked it.
Wet Hot American Summer– Um what?

Rewatched: The Lego Movie– Saw it on the flight. Still fucking awesome.
Sense and Sensibility– How else does one take a break from studying Pride and Prejudice?
Clueless– Technically still based on an Austen novel.
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels– Okay, can’t find an Austen connection. But shit, I should have rewatched this sooner. Totally forgot how brilliant it is.

  3. First-Timers: Boy Meets Girl, The Baron of Arizona, Run of the Arrow, and Verboten!

Re-Watches: Z-Channel: A Magnificent Obsession, Full Metal Jacket, and Clown of the Jungle.

    1. I’m way overdue for a FULL METAL JACKET rewatch, which is doubly shameful since the blu-ray I own of it is a freakin’ sweet version.

    1. Yet another reminder – I need to rewatch FIVE EASY PIECES. I’ve seen it before, but I feel like I must have been distracted because I can barely recall what happens.

  4. Hahaha at “ST. ELMO’S FIRE – There’s no fire? What the hell?!”! That sounds great.

I watched Atonement, ET and Howl’s Moving Castle — and that was a busy week for me. I don’t know how you do it, man.

    1. You’re younger than me, so you still have a life. That’s how I do it.
I was really chuffed to read how much you loved ATONEMENT. I actually need to revisit it. I get the feeling it has aged remarkably well in seven years, and still love the ideas and themes that the story plays with.

  5. Didn’t watch too many this week. Mostly Orphan Black which is pretty great. The other two movies that I saw were Last year at Marienbad which was a puzzle but a very well made one and The Congress which had an interesting idea that wasn’t fully developed. I wrote about them on my monthly recap in case you’re interested in reading more.

From your list I only saw St. Elmo’s Fire which was terrible and Battle Royale, a film that didn’t live up to its hype. Hunger Games is much better.

    1. A co-worker and fellow writer keeps trying to get me into Orphan Black. There’s a part of me that’s curious, but at this stage I fear it has been far too over-hyped.

      1. I agree, people tend to overrate this show, but you have to see it for the lead actress, Tatiana Maslany. She plays so many characters, it’s amazing.
