For a little more than a year now, I’ve been wondering what to make of Tim Burton. These days, films fans seem to utter the name with disgust, with weariness, with dare I say…boredom. How did it get this way for a man so many worshipped a generation ago? Did he collaborate with Depp and Bonham-Carter too many times? Did he create too many kooky tales of outsiders just trying to fit in? Did he get too enamoured with “re-imagining” established properties?

Whatever Tim has done, this much is clear; the shine is off the apple.

But for the second time in three weeks, I bring you a trailer for one of his projects – this time a production starring Depp and Bonham-Carter again. There’s the possibility that this might give us a bit of fun in May, but I’m not holding my breath. How’s about we all just go in with low expectations, and hope to be happily surprised?

  1. I don’t get it either. He was like my favourite director- mostly because he was awesome and rest because we have the same birthday, but now all the magic is gone. I can never really hate any of his movies, but I don’t love them anymore either.
And don’t even get me started on Johnny Depp. I worshiped that man 🙁
HBC is still pretty awesome though. And Eva Green is kicking ass in this trailer!

    1. Look on the bright side – maybe this film will allow all involved to have a bit more fun than they’ve been having this last decade. Perhaps between SHADOWS and FRANKENWEENIE, Burton will have turned a corner.

  2. Personally, I can’t wait to see this. I had no idea it was going to be so kooky (your word)! Yep, low expectations, but hoping for the best is the way to go. I’m just looking forward to seeing Eva Green be all crazy. And Depp, I’m sure, will deliver in the most kookish way possible.

    1. Glad you’re looking forward to it, as it’s a likely candidate for the film we’ll be discussing for your Matineecast appearance. I’ve been tossing a coin between this and MOONRISE KINGDOM…it’ll likely come down to release date, unless you have a specific Wes Anderson aversion.

  3. Part of my problem with Tim Burton isn’t so much weariness with him as it is a collection of Burton-fanboys (well, technically fanpeoples) that I’ve had to constantly deal with incessantly defending everything he does as “perfect” because it’s “what you expect from him.” My argument has long been that part of his allure is that his movies were traditionally not what you’d expect from anybody. That he has become his own greatest cliche is upsetting. Though I don’t see how he gets away from that. After all, nobody wants a Planet of the Apes 2.

    1. Are there all that many Burton fan-people left? I could have seen your weariness with them ten years ago, but they don’t seem to be as ardent as they once were.

It’s like hating on DiCaprio because of all the squealing fangirls from the TITANIC era.

  4. If anyone is gonna salvage this movie for me, it’s gonna be Eva Green and Chloe Moretz. Green looks to be having a blast in this, and she’s sexy as hell, so… Chloe Moretz has yet to disappoint me and has been doing stupendous work over the past two years, so…

Who am I kidding? This looks horrible!
