Hollywood baffles me sometimes. Considering how much everyone in that town knows about what everyone else is working on, you’d think that producers and studio exec’s wouldn’t play games of chicken and try to outdo one another. But faster that you can say “Deep Impact”, you’ll realize that they’ve gone and done it again.

In the spring, we’re going to get a new on-screen telling of Snow White courtesy of Tarsem, called MIRROR MIRROR…

Then, later in the summer, we’ll do it all again with a different spin on the tale thanks to a first time director trying to guide Thor and Bella Swan to something strong and empowering…

What do we think folks? Do either of these films look particularly appealing to you??

  1. Things like this always brings back memories of the movie The Muse with Albert Brooks and Sharon Stone where Stone is a ‘muse’ who goes around inspiring screenwriters. (*yada yada yada* spoiler warning *yada yada*) Only to turn out that she leads them all to what is basically the same story. Sometimes I wonder if Hollywood is just like that.

Perhaps one of the more obvious examples was the ’97/’98 one-two punch of the Prefontaine and Without Limits movies about the runner Steve Prefontaine.

  2. Yeeeaaahhh…. gonna go with both are going to flop critically, but rake it in financially. Such is the power of the names involved.

  3. I had higher hopes for the Tarsem version until I saw the trailer. I hate Julia Roberts.

But I do love me some Hemsworth, and as stated in a post last week, Kristen’s not all bad. Plus I like tone of it more. So I’ll consider Hunstman for next summer.

    1. After IMMORTALS, I was really hoping that MIRROR MIRROR would get Tarsem back to doing what he does best. Alas…

Inspired by a recent blog post by someone I know, I’m hoping that perhaps with the TWILIGHT Saga in its…er…”twilight”…that perhaps Stewart will show a bit more chops when she’s given better material.

      Here’s hoping!

  4. I think this is a case of “whoever wins, we lose”, though I would wager that the studios stand to gain quite a bit if audiences can be suckered into seeing these as easily as they were Alice In Wonderland (which at least Huntsman seems to be aping pretty heavily). I’d only see Mirror Mirror for Hammer and Tarsem; meanwhile, Huntsman looks superior but has Kristen “Black Hole of Charisma” Stewart in the lead. Granted, she’s playing against Charlize Theron, but how do we take seriously a film that asks us to believe that everyone thinks the former is more beautiful than the latter?

I don’t mean to take the jam out of anyone’s doughnut here, but I don’t have much hope for either of these artistically.
