The Hot Docs Festival kicks off tomorrow, so as of right now The Matinee is going all documentary all the time until May 6th. I urge you to stick around even if nonfiction films “aren’t your thing”, because I might very well have thoughts on stories that pertain to bands you like, athletes you cheered, or towns you live in.

I’ve seen some material in advance, and have largely been quite engaged by what I’ve seen. However, as is the custom, the folks running the festival don’t give me everything in advance – so there are still a lot of sexy titles to be seen. Take for instance the trailer embedded below.

This film is a road movie featuring Mumford & Sons, The Old Crow Medicine Show, and The Magnetic Zeroes. In a manner befitting the Festival Express, the band toured the American south by train – embarking from San Francisco by rail for New Orleans.

I can’t wait for the glorious sounds of these songs to echo off the walls of the theatre here in town, but for now – here’s a taste of the sort of film that will be featured on this site over the next ten days.

  1. Big Easy Express is high on my “want to see” list but it just does not fit into my schedule. However, if I do not get into the Beauty is Embarrassing screening then I will be hightailing it over to the Bloor Hot Docs Theatre to catch this film.

  2. Well I’d say “I’ll see you there” but I’m angling to catch it tomorrow (Sunday) at its second showing. Hope you catch it with it at some point!
