All Around the World

That wacky group of press corps, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, got up bright and early this morning and announced the nominees for the 2008 Golden Globe Awards. The Globes have had a weird history, from once being a joke, to becoming a major Oscar precursor, now slowly dipping back towards disreputation (For more on that, try to track down a doc called THE GOLDEN GLOBES: HOLLYWOOD’S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET). However, at the moment, they provide a pretty big glimpse into eventual Oscar nominees. There are a few instances where the HFPA seem to be off their rocker again this year, but for better or worse, here are their nominees for best picture…

  1. The HFPA are completely off their nut, and you are right that they are quickly becoming less and less of a significant precursor, certainly less of an indicator than the Critics Choice.

    Interesting notes:
    – this is such a misnomer for AMERICAN GANGSTER’s chances. While the Ridley nom is intriguing, there are SEVEN Drama nominees and KITE RUNNER wasn’t even eligible, not to mention that it still has JUNO and SWEENEY to worry about.
    – where’s INTO THE WILD? I think it’s dead.
    – It’s nice to see EASTERN PROMISES getting recognition, although it won’t get an Oscar nod for picture.
    – DIVING BELL & BUTTERFLY… wow! I think we have a best foreign film.
    – I do like HFPA’s foreign category, it’s always more competitive than the Oscar.
    – Thanks for showing up JESSE JAMES, Casey Affleck thanks everyone for sitting through 3 hours to see only him.

  2. oh, and I find it interesting that the Coens have started listing their films as co-directed.

it’s kinda absurd to think of them as individuals and it’d be nice if NO COUNTRY brought them both three oscars apiece.

  3. I’m not too sure WHAT to think of AMERICAN GANGSTER’S chances. It’s certainly in tough competition, but it’s beginning to look like that bad penny you SWORE you spent already that keeps showing up in your pocket.

Likewise I wouldn’t write off INTO THE WILD quite yet. Might not get a picture nom, but there’s lots for Oscar to love about it. Lets see what the guilds say.

DIVING BELL & BUTTERFLY is very quickly moving up my ‘to-see’ list. Got a great trailer for it before ATONEMENT this weekend, the slew of noms is only encouraging my excitement.

Jesses James was done-for when they settled on that title.
